Artist Dwele Subject Soul R & B Music Product Type Compact Disc

Track Title. 1 Poppa Yo (Intro). 2 Truth. 3 Find A Way. 4 Twuneanunda. 5 ANGEL (Interlude). 6 Day At A Time. 7 Subject. 8 Sho Ya Right. 9 Money Don’t Mean A Thing. 10 Hold On. 11 Kick Out Of You. 12 Without You. 13 Whoomp (Interlude). 14 Lady At Mahogany. 15 ANGEL (Reprise). 16 Let Your Hair Down. Dwele, first heard on the cool, relaxed chorus of Slum Village’s “Tainted,” isn’t a leather-lunged shouter or, the likely guess, a silky-smooth crooner. Blessed with a fine, sensitive voice, he’s a Marvin Gaye disciple, and like his influence, he has his own ideas about production and performance. That stubbornness makes him a difficult artist to pigeon-hole but an easy one to enjoy, especially for listeners tired of hearing constant repetition in R&B. Mostly self-produced and recorded at his home in Detroit, Subject favors the gauzy beats-and-bliss production style of Slum Village auteur Jay Though it’s a familiar format, it’s one that works well as a bed for his vocal style, which uses odd cadences, extended phrasing, multiple layers of vocals, and often his own whispered responses to his main lines. Halfway between R. Kelly and Madlib, Dwele writes toward R&B stereotypes but really makes the songs his own. On the title track, unsurprisingly a self-production, he accomplishes a rare feat, pulling off an inspirational song that truly sounds inspired. Dwele doesn’t sound quite as interesting when he’s not producing himself; a pair of outside productions, the single “Find a Way” and “Money Don’t Mean a Thing,” are intelligent, sensitive jams, but they make it clear that Dwele’s talents don’t tend to the anthemic. Like Gaye before him, he sounds more content and more inspired when the reins are in his hands. ~ John Bush, Rovi.

Rammstein Mutter Product Type Compact Disc Heavy Metal Rock Pop

Track Title. 1 Mein Herz Brennt. 2 Links 234. 3 Sonne. 4 Ich Will. 5 Feuer Frei. 6 Mutter. 7 Spieluhr. 8 Zwitter. 9 Rein Raus. 10 Adios. 11 Nebel. With the first Rammstein album you hear, it’s hard not to be slightly amazed by the sheer chutzpah of it all. The German lyrics, the prog rock tendencies, the classic metal guitars, and the ridiculous basso profundo vocals — you either fall for it, spurn it, or are utterly bemused by the extremeness of it all. Unless you’re a fanatic, it wears a little thin the second time around. And for most listeners, Mutter, the group’s third album and sequel to their inexplicable commercial breakthrough Sehnsucht, will be the second time around since it’s their first release since becoming a high profile act. Thing is, if you’ve heard that record, you’ve pretty much heard Mutter, since all the trademarks are in place, without much noticeable variation. Yes, there are slight differences, chief of which is the cleaner production, which streamlines everything so the guitars don’t seem as heavy, the songs not as epic, and the whole enterprise not as ridiculous. That’s not the same thing as stripping the group to the basics, however; it’s more like wrapping up the music in nice, shiny paper and putting a ribbon on it. That’s not really good for a group like Rammstein, but it doesn’t dilute their impact, either, because they are what they are and no amount of polish will make them mainstream (nor will it make it possible to take them seriously). So, that does mean that Mutter isn’t as good as Sehnsucht, but it isn’t a stumble either — and if you liked the first, you’ll like this (not the same thing as being amused by the first — in that case, this will try your patience). That still doesn’t answer the question whether anybody outside of diehards needs more than one Rammstein album, but that’s just a question of personal taste. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide.

Artist Billie Holiday Icon Love Songs Jazz Music Vocals Product Type

Track Title. 1 Crazy He Calls Me. 2 Them There Eyes. 3 You’re My Thrill. 4 It Had To Be You. 5 Come Rain Or Come Shine. 6 Nice Work If You Can Get It. 7 Everything I Have Is Yours. 8 Cheek To Cheek. 9 I Didn’t Know What Time It Was. 10 Embraceable You. 11 Our Love Is Here To Stay. 12 All The Way. As part of the “Love Songs” subcategory of its discount-priced Icon series of compilations, Universal Music Group issues this Billie Holiday CD, collecting 12 tracks from the latter part of her career, originally recorded for Decca (Tracks 1-3, produced by Milt Gabler), Verve (Tracks 4-11, produced by Norman Granz), and MGM (Track 12, produced by Ray Ellis). The Gabler recordings find Holiday fronting a string orchestra; Granz has her record standards by the likes of Arlen, Berlin, and Gershwin before a small jazz ensemble; and Ellis returns her to a string arrangement for a reading of the Frank Sinatra hit “All the Way.” Of course, Holiday’s voice betrays some wear and tear at this point in her career, more so as the album goes on, but she makes up for it with her idiosyncratic phrasing and surprising note choices, and the backings, whether orchestral or jazzy, are sympathetic. Most of the songs Holiday recorded in her career could be described as “love songs,” so this is really just a sampler of her later years, but a reasonable one. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi.
